The future for new buyers in London is gloomy.

The average London house price is 10 times the average salary. Only 26 per cent of people aged 20 to 39 expect to own their own home in the city by 2025 – the reverse of the situation in 2000, when 60 per cent of people owned their own homes.

But those at the top of the property pile are still buying and selling some of the swankiest apartments the city has ever seen.

The first private luxury apartment building in London with its own private art gallery has been unveiled this week.

The Chilterns at 24 Paddington Street contains 44 luxury residences, the majority of which were sold in 2013. It contains a signature restaurant, a 24 hour-hotel style concierge service, a gymnasium and sauna and a private cinema.

With the Chilterns now at 95 per cent completion the show home has been unveiled and the last three residences released for sale.

The new art gallery, with original pictures of the area by David Bailey, is part of the lobby of the building and is “one of the most exciting and unique features of the Chilterns”, according to Stephen Conway, CEO of Galliard Homes.

There are 10 specially commissioned framed David Bailey prints in the residence, showing views of the local area including Regency architecture, the BBC HQ, Baker Street Underground Station, Regent’s Park and the boating lake. A further 16 large scale pieces are on display in the gallery, curated by the photographer himself.

“Marylebone seems to have an abundance of goodies from a great fish and chip shop to Wigmore Hall, Damien Hirst’s office and shop. The best way to see a place is to photograph it. You don’t always see a place, a person, a park until you look at a photograph. So the new collection of work at The Chilterns provides my modest look at Marylebone. Keep looking until you really begin to see,” David Bailey said.

With prices going from £3.8 million up to £7.7 million for a three bedroom flat, the residence is located between the local shops of Marylebone High Street and Baker Street.

Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were reportedly looking at buying an apartment in the building in 2014. Some of the apartments are also owned by Royals from the Middle Middle East, from Qatar and Saudi Arabia.

Stephen Conway said the vision for the luxury apartment block was to create the most “exclusive address in Marylebone and the wider West End”.
