An annual university league table has revealed the institutions where students are most satisfied with the quality of teaching.

Oxford University may have met predictions for the top spot, with 93.3 per cent of students saying they were satisfied with teaching standards, but Coventry has managed to shake things up by beating Cambridge to second place.

Coventry also managed to make it to the highest ever position by a former polytechnic in the league tables. Its teacher satisfaction rating was 92.7 per cent.

Meanwhile Russell Group universities such as Birmingham, Leeds and Warwick trailed behind, with the latter scraping 89.2 per cent.

The results indicate that non-traditional universities are able to boast similar teaching standards to those found at esteemed institutions like Oxford and Cambridge.

Scores were published in the Guardian's annual University Guide, which focuses on subject-level tables.

It combines scores across aspects of university life that "matter most to students", such as course satisfaction, teaching quality, staff to student ratio, and employment prospects after graduation.

A recent study found that elite universities in Britain came out on top in world rankings, according to a table which compares universities by faculty.
