Lotto: Couple miss out on £35 million jackpot despite having all six numbers due to technical glitch

After topping up the online account, the couple believed their payment had gone through

A couple who picked all six winning lottery numbers have missed out on the £35 million jackpot after their online transaction on the app failed to go through.

Edwina and David Nylan from Leicester tried to claim their winnings, but were told by Lotto operator Camelot that there was no record of their transaction.

The couple chose the winning numbers by using an app on Mr Nylan’s phone, which generates random numbers and then found they had insufficient funds on their online account.

After topping up, the couple believed their purchase had gone through.

Ms Nylan, 55, said: “I am gutted, but what can we do? We have played for years, and had our online account for some time, so it is not as if we didn’t know what we were doing.

“I have just had to carry on with things and not get too down.

“Shocked isn’t the word, but as a family we stick together and just have to be grateful for what we’ve got.

The couple have appealed to Camelot to award them the money, despite the mistake.

“When the numbers came up, it looked like we had got all six and had won the jackpot but when I checked, there was nothing from Camelot,” said Ms Nylan.

“I rang customer services at Camelot and the person I spoke to said they could see from their records that we had intended to buy those numbers but they said the purchase did not go through because we only had 60p in our account,” she added.

Camelot has confirmed the couple did attempt to buy a ticket, but said the player had insufficient funds and the attempts were not successful.

A spokeswoman from Camelot said: “When anyone successfully purchases a ticket on the Lottery website they will see a purchase confirmation screen, receive an email confirming their purchase and be able to see the ticket in their National Lottery online account.

“Only tickets that have been successfully purchased can be entered into the draw.”
