A lottery ticket bought in the UK won a record £84.4m in last night's EuroMillions draw. The prize is almost exactly 50 per cent more than the previous highest UK payout, the £56m won on in February this year by 43-year-old Nigel Page and his partner Justine Laycock from Cheltenham in Gloucestershire.

The ticket holder has not been named, and it is not known whether it was bought by an individual player or a syndicate. The prize is among the biggest in the history of the EuroMillions draw, the pan-European lottery with winning odds of 76,275,360 to 1. In May 2009, a 25-year-old woman from Mallorca won a record £108m after the jackpot had not been won for seven consecutive draws. The winning numbers in last night's draw were 1, 17, 31, 43 and 47, with Lucky Star numbers 02 and 03.
