Vagina-scented candles and vulva coloring books are a bit too much for Gwyneth Paltrow’s mother, the actress and Goop CEO revealed on Thursday.

On NBC’s TODAY Show, Savannah Guthrie asked Paltrow if her mother, the actress Blythe Danner, is ever aghast at some of her daughter’s products.

“Is your mother ever like, ‘Gwyneth! I can’t believe…” the host asked.

“Always. Always,” Paltrow interjected, laughing.

Guthrie said she was asking “because Ms Blythe Danner is very elegant and very proper, it seems to me.”

“She is,” the Iron Man actress responded, “but you know, even proper ladies have sexuality too.”

Goop, an upscale wellness brand that Paltrow founded in 2008, is known for selling female anatomy-themed items. The company has sold vaginal eggs, a candle called “This Smells Like My Vagina,” and, as of recently, vibrators.

“You do have some products that keep selling out,” Guthrie said, apparently referring to the self-pleasuring devices. “Are you surprised?”

Paltrow said she was not.

“I think that our sexuality is such an important part of who we are,” she said. “And one of the things we really believe in at Goop is eliminating shame from these topics.”

The company has faced many controversies, and not just for breaking taboos. Doctors have accused Goop of promoting pseudoscience and pushing products and practices that could be harmful to women’s health – such as the jade eggs for “vaginal weightlifting,” which gynecologists say can cause bacterial infections, and “vaginal steaming,” which in 2019 left one woman with second-degree burns.

None of this has slowed down the business, which is currently valued at about $250 million.

In theTODAY Show interview, Guthrie asked how Paltrow feels to be known equally for her acting and for her work with Goop.

“This is part of your legacy now,” the host said. “So if it says in the first paragraph of your obituary, ‘Gwyneth Paltrow, Oscar winner and, you know, the candle…’”

“Good!” Paltrow responded. “Hopefully I’ll be an amalgam of things, as all women are.”
