Surf City, where every sea dog has its day

California's Huntington Beach hosted the second annual Surf City Dog Tournament, where a host of surfing canines – or should that be boarder collies – turned out to ride the waves.

Event organisers and dog owners alike stress that, despite the petrified appearance of many of the participating pooches, dog surfers, just like their human counterparts, positively love the thrill. The surfing competition was just one of a weekend-long programme of parades and performances for beach-loving dogs but, unsurprisingly it is the one that attracts the most spectators.

Other events included a "Yappy Hour" and a "High Maintenance Bitch" dog fashion show.

The fashion show models are all dogs available for adoption, with the events raising money for a Southern Californian pet adoption centre.
