Democrat strategist suggests projecting huge Biden hologram over Grand Canyon on Fortnite

Campaign staffers suggest gigantic holograms of Mr Biden and Mr Obama above American landmarks on Fornite as possible convention replacement

As Democrats begin considering what this summer’s national convention could look like amid Covid-19, Joe Biden consultants have suggested that an enormous virtual version of their candidate for president could be projected over the Grand Canyon.

Democratic campaign strategist Lis Smith said during a Politico Playbook livestream on Monday that Fortnite could be used as a platform to unite supporters around Mr Biden.

“Stefan Smith, who did digital work for Pete Buttigieg, cited the other day how Travis Scott’s takeover of Fortnite... that was a really creative way to think about it,” said Ms Smith, who was asked how the 2020 Democratic convention could occur online.

More than 12 million people tuned-in to watch Travis Scott’s Fortnite show in April.

“If we could do that with Joe Biden — Joe Biden projected against the Grand Canyon. That might be a little bit ambitious, but we could have exclusive musical content from some of the biggest musical artists in the game at these, driving eyeballs to these conventions so that people could watch them.”

The discussion comes as Democrats consider how the former vice president could accept his nomination as the Democratic Party’s candidate for president in August, in Milwaukee.

On Tuesday, the Democratic convention committee is expected to amend procedures in an apparent preparation for an online convention, “so as to safeguard the ability of all validly-elected Convention delegates to participate in the Convention in person or by means that allow for appropriate social distancing.”

Mr Smith suggested last week that the Democratic convention could “hop from digital events on Instagram Live to Facebook to Twitch to Twitter,” in addition to a main Fortnite event surrounding Mr Biden.

“Give America a giant avatar of President Obama introducing another avatar of Joe Biden while they stand amidst a digital rendering of America through the ages,” said Mr Smith to Yahoo news.

“Give America Joe Biden accepting his nomination from a national monument like the Grand Canyon while the sun sets behind him,” added Mr Smith.
