Kayleigh McEnany denies Trump undermining Dr Fauci despite sending 'opposition research' to reporters

After cancelling a campaign rally that was scheduled for New Hampshire on 11 July, Donald Trump made up for lost time by launching a nearly one-hour attack against Joe Biden from the White House Rose Garden as the president went down a literal list of grievances and the Democratic presidential candidate's platform pitches, which the president had grossly mischaracterised.

Moments earlier, the administration rescinded controversial new measures that would have effectively banned any international students from living in the United States during the fall months amid the coronavirus pandemic, with the news being announced after a court hearing that lasted just minutes.

A federal judge announced that the administration had reached a settlement with universities who had sued over the measures.

Mr Trump has continued to insist US schools must reopen this autumn despite the raging coronavirus, declaring at the White House on Monday that “schools should be opened. Kids want to go to schools. You’re losing a lot of lives by keeping things closed.”

Asked by CBS News on Tuesday what he would tell parents and teachers worried about sending their children to school, he said: "I would tell parents and teachers that you should find yourself a new person whoever is in charge of that decision, because it's a terrible decision."

Hillary Clinton has meanwhile warned Americans must “be ready” for Trump not to “go quietly” if he loses his re-election bid.

The former vice president recently unveiled a sweeping $2tn environmental plan on Tuesday seeking to achieve carbon-free power by 2035.

Beijing hits back after US says its pursuit of resources in South China Sea is ‘unlawful’

US secretary of state Mike Pompeo said on Monday that the US now regards virtually all Chinese maritime claims outside its internationally recognised waters to be illegitimate.

“The United States is not a country directly involved in the disputes. However, it has kept interfering in the issue,” the Chinese embassy in Washington responded angrily on its website. “Under the pretext of preserving stability, it is flexing muscles, stirring up tension and inciting confrontation in the region.”

Trump adminstration tells 11.1m US unemployed to just 'find something new'

A new White House-backed ad campaign urges people who are unemployed or unhappy in their jobs or careers to go out and "find something new."

The opening ad in the campaign beginning on Tuesday features ordinary people sharing their stories. A companion website provides links to training and other resources.

The Trump administration has long emphasised skills-based job and vocational training as an alternative to two or four-year college degree programs, arguing that college isn't for everyone and that many jobs don't require a degree.

But the long-in-the-works effort has taken on a new sense of urgency after the coronavirus outbreak cost millions of people their jobs, many of which may be lost forever.

The campaign is a product of the White House's American Workforce Policy Advisory Board, which Trump created in 2018. The board is co-chaired by Trump's daughter and White House adviser, Ivanka, and commerce secretary Wilbur Ross.

"There has never been a more critical time for Americans of all ages and backgrounds to be aware of the multiple pathways to career success and gain the vocational training and skills they need to fill jobs in a changing economy," said Ivanka, who graduated from the University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

The nonprofit Ad Council was announcing "Find Something New" on Tuesday, which it created in collaboration with IBM, Apple and members of the Business Roundtable, along with the White House and the workforce policy advisory board.

The initial 30-second spot features ordinary people talking about their experiences with career challenges and transitions. Among them are a fitness instructor who completed an apprenticeship programme and became a welder after her gym went under and a man who lost his job twice in one year, took online certification courses and now works as a tech consultant.

"I got laid off twice, but you got to keep going," the man says, adding later on in the ad: "I'm now a consultant in the tech space."

Another woman says she had no career plan after finishing high school, but "I found a medical course online" and became a phlebotomist. "You will find something," she says.

The companion website offers links to education and training options, including online and virtual learning.

Additional ads are expected to be produced. All will appear nationwide across TV, digital and print platforms in time and space donated by various media companies, the Ad Council said.

Funding was provided by more than 20 corporations and organizations, including Apple, IBM and the US Chamber of Commerce.

The Ad Council declined to disclose the cost of the campaign. which will run at least through the end of the year.
