Vogue cover model Roosmarijn de Kok charged with stealing chocolates and fish oil from Whole Foods store

Her lawyer argued that the 19-year-old was buying yogurt and forgot the other items in her bag

A Dutch model, who has appeared on the cover of Vogue magazine, has been charged with shoplifting fish oil and three chocolate bars from an upscale supermarket in New York.

A Whole Foods security guard stopped Roosmarijn de Kok as she left the shop in mid-July. The guard allegedly spotted de Kok taking DHA fish oil and the bars of chocolate from a shelf and “conceal[ing]” them inside a bag, and did not have a receipt for the items.

The 19-year-old is signed to the Wilhelmina modelling agency, which also has rapper Iggy Azalea and RnB singer Chris Brown on its books. As well as appearing on the cover of Vogue Thailand, she has modelled for Elle magazine and for Urban Outfitters.

De Kok faces charges of petit larceny and criminal possession of stolen property for allegedly shoplifting from the Whole Foods store in the fashionable Tribeca area at around 3:20 pm on 18 July.

Appearing in court on Monday, Manhattan Criminal Court Judge Denise Dominguez asked Ms de Kok’s lawyer to order that she stand properly, and “unfold her arms”, the New York Daily News reported.

Her lawyer Sal Strazzullo, who is well-known for representing high-profile clients, argued that de Kok had forgotten that the chocolates were in her bag after she bought fat-free yogurt and protein bars from the shop.

He added that Ms de Kok should be cleared of the charges because she did not leave the store with the items.

He told the New York Post the young woman was “totally innocent.”

“While she was about to leave the store...she remembered what she had in her bag. When she turned around, the store detectives were like, ‘We got you,’ ” he told the newspaper.

Ms de Kok rejected an offer from prosecutors to have the charges dropped within six months if she keeps a clean record. It is unclear if the same offer will made available to her a second time.

Her case was adjourned to 25 September.
