England put their opening-day defeat against New Zealand firmly behind them when they beat Bangladesh by 137 runs in the Cricket World Cup in Dharamshala.

The defending champions were utterly humbled by the Kiwis in a nine-wicket defeat that left viewers stunned, and even more problematically, dealt a significant blow to the side’s net run rate.

The Himalayan foothills provided a stunning backdrop to the occasion, and despite pre-match discussions being dominated by concerns around the nature of the pitch, it did not have any significant effect on the performance. Speaking to reporters on the eve of the clash, Jos Buttler described the pitch as “poor”, claiming it was different to the one used when he played at the same ground during the IPL, but England emerged victorious and having boosted their net run rate.

The pitch was also a cause for concern when Afghanistan played against Bangladesh there, as Mujeeb Ur Rahman jarred his knee in the sandy turf diving for a ball, and head coach and former England batter Jonathan Trott said players were “unsure” over their footing.

Bangladesh 186-6 (38) Hridoy 38, Mahedi 7, Wood 0-26 (8) need 179 runs from 72

Hridoy finds the large gap between cover and mid on to score a boundary as Wood continues to bowl, but he is not looking comfortable on the walk back to his mark and is definitely taking his time over it.

With a wide first ball that will be a long over from Wood, and it went for 6.

Bangladesh 179-6 (37) Hridoy 33, Mahedi 7, Rashid 0-32 (7) need 185 runs to win

Rashid is back into the attack, England need four more wickets.

The slip is in and under the lights England will be hoping he can find something here.

And Topley has dropped Mahedi! It was shin-height and straight to him and the England bowler has to do better there and hold on to that.

Bangladesh 176-6 (36) Hridoy 32, Mahedi 4, Wood 0-20 (7) need 189 runs to win

Wood will bowl his 7th, still in the hunt for his first wicket, he goes wide to try and create the angle, but the batters are just batting the ball away for singles.

Just two from that over, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he took a break there, he looked a bit tired.

Bangladesh 174-6 (35) Hridoy 31, Mahedi 3, Topley 4-43 (10) need 191 runs to win

Wood is having to do four balls in a row of fielding after his over of 90mph.

Five runs from the first 3 balls of the over, but he can’t get a five-fer as he finishes his 10th over after an excellent performance of four for 43.

Bangladesh 169-6 (34) Hridoy 27, Mahedi 2, Wood 0-18 (6) need 196 runs to win

Let’s have a look at the speeds from this Mark Wood over:

First ball: 92.6mph

2nd: 92.3mph

3rd: 92.3mph

4th: 91.9mph

5th: 91.7mph

6th: 92 mph

Bangladesh 168-6 (33) Hridoy 26, Mahedi 2, Topley 4-38 (9) need 197 runs to win

Topley is one wicket away from a five-fer here, something he will want to achieve after missing out on both the 2019 World Cup and the T20 in 2022 through injury.

Dot balls first up, Bangladesh are not going for this, maybe they two have one eye on net run rate.

Bangladesh 166-6 (32) Hridoy 25, Mahedi 1, Wood 0-17 (5) need 199 runs to win

Wood is back, England are looking to get this over with as soon as possible and restore at net run rate which has seen them rooted to the foot of the table in the tournament before this match.

Wicket! Mushfiqur out for 51! Bangladesh 164-6 (31) Hridoy 24, Topley 4-36 (8) need 201 runs to win

Topley has not looked anywhere near as threatening with the older ball than he did at the top of the order, but he has been one of the least expensive bowlers for England.

If Bangladesh go for it England may have their chance, but at the moment they look okay and could drag it out.

But that’s the breakthrough! It was a poor error from Mushfiqur who had offered nothing until then! and he plays it straight to Adil Rashid at deep third.

Sonia Twigg10 October 2023 12:48

Bangladesh 160-5 (30) Hridoy 21, Mushfiqur 50, Rashid 0-28 (6) need 205 runs to win

The Bangladesh batters have kept rotating the strike against Rashid, but haven’t really put the pressure back on him, England don’t need to do anything different - unless they want to try and improve the net run rate.

Sonia Twigg10 October 2023 12:44

50 for Mushfiqur! Bangladesh 160-5

A good 50 for Mushfiqur who has had to work hard here, from 61 deliveries.
