Champions Manchester City’s 12-match winning streak in the Premier League came to an end as they were held to a 1-1 draw at Brighton , who secured Europa League football for next season.

Treble-chasing City, who wrapped up a fifth title in six seasons at the weekend, lacked their usual intensity but took the lead when Phil Foden slotted home in the 25th minute.

Brighton have sealed sixth-place and the club’s first venture into Europe, and showed why with some vibrant football and Julio Enciso equalised for the hosts with a stunning long-range effort in the 38th minute.

Danny Welbeck had a goal ruled out before halftime for Brighton and Erling Haaland thought he had put City ahead late on but was penalised for shirt-pulling after a VAR check.

It was the first time since February that City had dropped points and with one league game left at Brentford on Sunday they have 89 points, eight more than Arsenal.

84 mins: Pep Guardiola isn’t happy with that VAR decision. He’s been berating the assistant referees and finally the on-field ref has had enough.

He jogs over and shows Guardiola a yellow card.

NO GOAL! Brighton 1-1 Man City

81 mins: The goal has been ruled out! VAR tells the referee to head over to the pitchside monitor. He watches as Erling Haaland tugs on Levi Colwill’s shirt in order to get ahead of him and that’s enough for the referee to rule out the goal for a foul.

Brighton 1-1 Man City

69 mins: If things remain as they are Brighton will mathematically be guaranteed Europa League football next season.

They are pretty much going to get it anyway as Aston Villa’s goal difference is nowhere close to theirs but confirmation of a spot in Europe’s second tier would be a nice reward for tonight’s performance.

Brighton 1-1 Man City

66 mins: The second half hasn’t ignited in the same way that the first 45 minutes did but Brighton look the more aggressive team. It feels as though a win would mean more to them than to Man City which is probably true.

Brighton 1-1 Man City

60 mins: Kevin De Bruyne manages an hour before Pep Guardiola says that’s enough, Julian Alvarez is introduced to replace him.

Danny Welbeck leads the charge for Brighton, he puts Alvarez under serious pressure deep in his own half and recovers possession befor giving it to Mitoma.
