Lionel Messi is the overwhelming favourite to win the Fifa Ballon d’Or, which will be awarded at a ceremony in Zurich on Monday.

The Barcelona forward led his side to an historic treble, as part of a phenomenal attacking trio alongside Luis Suarez and Neymar.

The latter, alongside current holder and Real Madrid forward Cristiano Ronaldo, are also nominated for the award, but Messi is widely expected to take home the prize.

The Argentinian endured a relatively lean 2014, a year that will be remembered for his failure to win the World Cup for his nation, despite winning the tournament’s best player award.

In 2015, however, Messi not only won La Liga, the Copa del Rey and the Champions League, but raised his game to new levels. Despite not scoring in the final against Juventus in Berlin, his sublime performance in the semi-finals against Bayern Munich will live long in the memory and destroyed his former manager Pep Guardiola’s hopes of winning a third European Cup.

The single blotch on his record again came on the international stage, as Chile beat Argentina 4-1 on penalties to win the Copa America.
