Former Manchester United captain Roy Keane has unleashed his latest tirade towards the current crop of players, claiming that Ashley Young’s time at Old Trafford as “not good enough” and labelling Rio Ferdinand’s performance “ridiculous”.

Keane was speaking at half-time during the 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk as part of ITV’s studio line-up, and he criticised the players for looking like a bunch of individuals rather than a group that could work well as a team. England international Phil Jones saw United home with a 67th minute strike that found the back of the net, seeing David Moyes’ side return to winning ways after the two defeats to Everton and Newcastle which followed the draw at Tottenham.

“There has been no reaction from the United players from the disappointment of last week,” said Keane in his analysis of their first half performance. “They don't look like a team, just a collection of individuals running around.

'You can defend players for making mistakes but you cannot defend players for not tackling and not getting close to people.

“They (United) had a couple of good chances through Ashley Young towards the end of the first half. He should certainly hit the target. I think it sums up his time at Man United, just not good enough.

“David Moyes took the heat off the players before the game by saying it is his responsibility but we are talking about experienced players.

“Rio Ferdinand's decision making, the chances he has taken, it is ridiculous. It is like his debut tonight.

“As we said before the game, there are big question marks over the manager and the players. That for Manchester United is certainly not good enough.”

United have got off to their worst start in the Premier League for 12 years, with their current haul of 22 points a concerning 14 less than at this stage last season. However, despite Keane’s verdict on the failures so far this term, Europe has provided Moyes with something of a welcomed distraction, having progressed to the last 16 without losing a single match.
