Huddersfield Town were beaten 2-0 in the second round of the Carabao Cup by Stoke City. which extended their winless run at the start to the season.

However, this was not the biggest talking point from the Britannia Stadium, and even Sadio Berahino’s first goal in two years was overshadowed by one of the most remarkable own goals that you will ever see.

As the Terriers chased a late equaliser, Juninho Bacuna found the back of the net with a superb volley from range - his own net that is.

Stoke cleared the ball forward and Bacuna tried to hook the ball towards the Stoke goal Huddersfield on the front foot in their desperate search for an equaliser. But he spectacularly mistimed his kick and sent the ball over goalkeeper Jonas Lossl - who was returning to his area from an attacking corner - and into his own net in the 97th minute.

Bacuna, who was making his debut, joined Huddersfield from Dutch side FC Groningen and his strike has been lauded ‘the greatest own goal’.

Terriers manager David Wagner did not see the funny side and was disappointed with his squad’s lack of quality after making wholesale changes.

“In general it’s a disappointing evening because we’re out of the competition,” he said.

“We have to be honest. Out attitude and effort is there, but we’ve lacked quality and the Stoke goalkeeper only had to use his hands once.

“I’ve got no complaints. I’ll always back my players if they work hard, but we have to improve the quality.”
