England striker Jermain Defoe made a scoring return to the international stage and substitute Jamie Vardy added a second goal as the hosts laboured to a 2-0 victory over Lithuania in World Cup qualifying Group F on Sunday.

Veteran Defoe, making his first appearance for nearly 3-1/2 years, fired lacklustre England ahead in the 21st minute at Wembley but Gareth Southgate's team struggled to finish off a Lithuania side who are 93 places lower in the FIFA rankings.

England survived a couple of worrying moments and had to wait until the 66th minute to double their lead when Defoe's replacement Vardy finished neatly shortly after coming on.

Relive England's routine victory below...

Which players impressed at Wembley?

The return of Jermain Defoe

Defoe returns to the England team for the first time since November 2013, having enjoyed a fine campaign thus far during which he has scored 14 Premier League goals despite Sunderland languishing rock bottom of the Premier League.

His last goal for the Three Lions? A brace in an 8-0 thumping of San Marino, in March 2013. England went on to qualify for the 2014 World Cup but Defoe was surprisingly overlooked for a place in the squad, and hasn't featured for England since. Until now!

Southgate is very happy for England starters Defoe and Keane, courtesy of ITV:

Jermain Defoe is very excited. He's a senior player with a point to prove. He's impressed us all this week.

The formation we had already decided on. It was a plus how Michael Keane played in Germany. It's a great day for him - I think it's his Wembley debut.

Southgate also had the following to say on the late, great, Graham Taylor, who is being commemorated ahead of this match.

The one regret is that I hope he understood how well revered he was. Hopefully this is a special day for his family.

There will also be a minute's silence here at Wembley in memory of those who lost their lives during last week's terror attack on Parliament, along with a pre-match wreath laying ceremony. England's players are wearing black armbands.

Wembley expects...

This match is, officially, a sellout, although with five minutes remaining until kick-off there are still a fair few empty seats. There will be a lot of attention on how England's fans conduct themselves after the unsavoury events in Dortmund earlier this week, although it's a very good natured atmosphere so far.

Here come the teams! Joe Hart leads out England and it's time for the anthems.

Lithuania's anthem very well observed.

Thank god.

There is also a minute's silence for the victims of this week's terror attack in Westminster, which is just as well observed.

England win the toss and will kick-off.

1 min: Here we go! Defoe kicks-off, Walker and Bertrand immediately hare forward down the wings, and we're away!

England play some keep ball before Oxlade-Chamberlain's slack pass is intercepted by Slavickas. But England soon have the ball back, through Keane.
