Man City vs Brentford LIVE: Premier League result, final score and reaction as Toney scores late winner
Man City look to move back to the top of the Premier League as they host Brentford
Brentford completed a stunning victory over Manchester City in their final game before the World Cup. It has been decades since the Bees beat City away from home but they started brilliantly with two great chances inside the opening 10 minutes for Frank Onyeka and Ivan Toney.
The breakthrough came through a long free kick as Ben Mee won the initial ball and nodded it up to Toney in the box where Brentford’s captain headed the Bees in front. The visitors then sat back and looked to defend their lead up to the break but Man City burst into life. They dominated possession and built momentum on the edge of the Brentford penalty area. Kevin De Bruyne then swung a corner into the path of Phil Foden who smashed City back level just before half-time.
An injury to Aymeric Laporte early in the second half meant that 10 minutes of stoppage time were added on at the end as City pushed for a late winner. Brentford kept the faith though and committed men up the pitch during a rapid counter-attack that saw Josh Dasilva feed Toney the ball and the striker calmly turned it home for a historic win.

Newcastle vs Chelsea
Chelsea are in danger of going five successive Premier League games without a win for the first time since a run of seven from October to December 2012.
The Blues will be outside the Premier League top four on Christmas Day for only the third time in 21 seasons.
Howe’s magic touch

James Maddison an injury concern for Gareth Southgate ahead of World Cup
England were dealt another World Cup injury blow when James Maddison limped out of Leicester’s Premier League game at West Ham.
Maddison was rewarded for his impressive form for the Foxes this season by being named in Gareth Southgate’s 26-man squad on Thursday.
But with Qatar 2022 set to start a week on Sunday, the midfielder limped out of the action during the first half at West Ham, having gone down holding his lower leg.
Fellow England midfielder Jordan Henderson was left out of Liverpool’s home game against Southampton due to personal reasons and Southgate will be keeping his fingers crossed for better news on the duo.

Reece James World Cup selection would have been ‘arrogance’, Gareth Southgate claims
Gareth Southgate said it would have shown “arrogance” to pick Reece James for the World Cup given his injury as he revealed Kyle Walker could be fit before the end of the group stages.
James was left “devastated” after getting a call from Southgate on Wednesday explaining why he had missed out on a place in his 26-man squad, the recovery from a recent knee injury meaning there was no room for him in Qatar.
The Chelsea full-back requires a longer lay-off than fellow defender Walker, who is back in training following groin surgery.
