Newcastle 2018/19 Premier League profile

Newcastle climbed further away from the Premier League relegation zone with a third consecutive victory and their first at Turf Moor in more than 40 years.

Federico Fernandez scored the opener in the 2-1 victory in only the fourth minute via a big deflection off Ben Mee and Ciaran Clark, in for the injured Paul Dummett, made it two 19 minutes later.

Burnley pulled one back through a fine header from Sam Vokes five minutes before the break but were unable to find an equaliser and Sean Dyche's side remain just above the bottom three.

Newcastle would have won by more but for an extraordinary miss from Matt Ritchie while Joselu hit a post. PA

Dyche hopes Burnley can continue improvement against Newcastle

Sean Dyche hopes Burnley can continue the improvement they showed against Leicester before the international break when they resume their campaign against Newcastle.

The Clarets put a three-game losing run, during which they conceded 13 goals, behind them by holding the Foxes to a goalless draw on an emotional afternoon as the King Power Stadium remembered late Leicester owner Vichai Srivaddhanaprabha.

Dyche said: "I thought the structure of the side was better. I thought it looked more like what we look like on a consistent level of performance. There's still more to come.

"I think we showed a lot of signs of continued belief in the growth, and literal growth in performances, last season, that's stuttered a bit at the beginning of this season, for many different reasons I feel.

"We know where the team is statistically and we know that still needs adjusting but, for the last number of weeks, we are showing signs of getting back to where we want to be. We know we still need to do more on the offensive side." (PA)

Kick-off delayed

News just coming in that the match has been delayed by 30 minutes after a medical emergency in the tunnel. It is understood that the person involved is not on either of the playing or backroom staff at either club, and has been taken to hospital while conscious. It means the match will kick-off at 8.30pm.

Here we go then. Carragher and Ginola have done their best to fill this unexpected delay in the Sky Sports studio, but they can finally put their feet up: the players are in the tunnel and ready to go.

Kick-off!

We are under way at Turf Moor, Burnley getting the game going on a chilly evening in the north west.

3 min: Almost an early error by Dubravka who just gets his pass away as Chris Wood tried to shut him down. Newcastle steam up the other end and earn a corner.

GOAL! Burnley 0-1 Newcastle (Fernandez, 5 min)

The corner is worked short and when it comes into the box it's cleared, but it eventually falls to Federico Fernandez on the edge who fires a very fortunate, deflected strike past Hart to break the deadlock!

11 min: Burnley are struggling to make any inroads in these early stages. Newcastle have started with a high-energy press as soon as the home side encroach into their half, though they may not be able to keep this up all evening, you suspect.

15 min: Jack Cork is caught by Diame who might have seen a booking on another day, but gets away with a ticking off.
