Jose Mourinho could return to Real Madrid if Chelsea sack him, claims former club president Ramon Calderon

Real Madrid would be willing to take back Jose Mourinho if the Chelsea manager pays the ultimate price for his side’s poor form, says their former president Ramon Calderon.

Mourinho finds himself under increasing pressure to turn the Blues’ faltering season around and heads into today’s Premier League fixture with Liverpool knowing defeat is not an option.

Chelsea have already dropped 19 points this season and languish down in 15th position in the Premier League table, and Mourinho admitted on Friday that he cannot guarantee Champions League qualification this season via a top-four finish given the nine-point gap to fourth-place Manchester United.

However, should Mourinho lose his job between now and the end of the season, Calderon has admitted that his former club are considering trying to lure him back to the Santiago Bernabeu should they see that current head coach Rafa Benitez is not working out for the side.

Calderon told Bein Sports: "You know that in football that results are important. Chelsea is in a situation that is not normal for them and I don't know what [Roman] Abramovich will be thinking about that. This situation was lived by both of them a few years ago and he decided to sack him. If he is not anymore in Chelsea I think [Florentino] Perez will be really willing to bring him back to Real Madrid.”

Calderon went on to reveal that Real actually tried to sign up Mourinho as Carlo Ancelotti’s replacement last summer, only to fail to persuade him to leave Chelsea and instead appoint Benitez.

"He was trying to do that this season,” said Calderon. “He couldn't because Mourinho didn't like to come. He said he didn't like that for various reasons and then Perez went to sign [Joachim] Low, the German that is coaching the national team, then [Jurgen[] Klopp and finally Benitez. The truth is that Benitez was the fourth option for Real Madrid. I think Perez is still trying to bring [Mourinho] back here. He really likes him.”

The 64-year-old Spanish lawyer believes that Perez still wants Mourinho to come back to the Madrid club in the future even though his exit in 2013 was a fairly messy one. Mourinho oversaw a divide in the dressing room that most infamously saw him drop veteran goalkeeper Iker Casillas from the squad. However, that is not believed to have harmed his chances of a return.

"I don't rule out that,” added Calderon. “If he is not anymore at Chelsea and Benitez is not doing well at the end of the season here, I don't rule out he's going to be back here. The president is really looking for that.

"As I said, I wasn't just a fan of Mourinho but because of the things he did here. He's got the worst record ever for a coach that has been coaching Real Madrid for three years. Apart from that, his behaviour wasn't the right one but Perez always backed him and remember that he decided to put a big banner saying 'Mourinho, your finger shows us the way', referring to that sad episode when Mourinho poked the finger in [Tito] Vilanova's eye in that really horrible match. That's why I say that I'm sure that if Mourinho is not anymore in Chelsea at the end of the season and things are not well with Real Madrid and Benitez here, I see Mourinho again on the bench of Real Madrid."
