Liverpool will be without captain Jordan Henderson for Saturday’s Merseyside derby with Everton after he missed training on Thursday.

The Englishman had been training with the Reds despite not being fit enough to be named in Gareth Southgate’s squad for the international double header, and Jurgen Klopp had hoped he would be able to name Henderson in the starting XI at Anfield on Saturday lunchtime.

However, Henderson missed training again with the foot injury which has kept him out for the last five weeks and therefore will not be risked against the Toffees.

“Jordan suffered a little setback and he is not in team training until now,” Klopp said.

“When we were here last time I said I hoped he could be in training this week. But we have to wait for this.”

The 26-year-old’s last appearance for Liverpool came in the 2-0 win over Tottenham at the start of February but he also missed the start of 2017 with the same injury.

Striker Daniel Sturridge did train, although it was with the club’s rehab staff rather than with the rest of the first team and he will also not make the squad for Saturday.

Sturridge has himself not played since the 2-0 defeat to Hull on February 4th having suffered a virus and then a hip injury which has caused him to miss two hot weather training camps in Spain and Tenerife.

The 27-year-old made the telling impact in the reverse fixture earlier this season when he came off the bench and hit the post, allowing Sadio Mane to tap into an empty net.
