Wayne Rooney accepts that his future for both Manchester United and England could see him transform into a midfielder after excelling in a deeper role during the 3-1 victory over Bournemouth that brought the curtain down on the Premier League season.

Rooney scored the opening goal for the home side before a beautiful floated pass allowed Ashley Young to complete the scoring after 18-year-old Marcus Rashford had added a second. The England captain has finished the season in a much deeper role than he is accustomed to, and he admits that he faces a choice over his position during the off-season.

"Sometimes you have to make choices in your career and at the moment it's better for me to play deeper," Rooney said after the victory.

"It could be a bit different for England where I could still be the striker but probably next season that's where I see myself playing."

Rooney was one of five strikers named in Roy Hodgson’s preliminary England squad, with Harry Kane, Jamie Vardy and Daniel Sturridge tipped to battle it out for the right to start the opening group game against Russia at Euro 2016. While Rashford joined Rooney in the squad, he is expected to be one of the three players that will need to be dropped before the final squad is announced by 31 May.

While his future at United looks destined to be in midfield, Rooney did admit that the international picture was less clear, though he said he trusted Hodgson to make the right choice when he leads out England in France next month.

"I'm sure Roy Hodgson will have his ideas of where he thinks is best for me," Rooney told the BBC.

"It could be where I play for England, but that's down to Roy. I'm sure we'll speak when we meet up and he'll tell me where he wants me to play."
