Bites: Why foodies are looking west
Whiteleys, the once-sorry shopping centre in Bayswater, west London, continues to tart itself up for food lovers. The process that began late last year with the opening of Le Café Anglais continues with the opening of Food Inc (pictured). The work of Dominic Ford (ex-head honcho of Harvey Nicks' food retail), Food Inc is a posh food emporium exploded into separate specialist counters on what was the ground floor of the old department store, with a café to follow.
Meanwhile, up in Leeds, Anthony Flinn (the chef whose rapidly expanding empire in the aspiring West Yorkshire capital already includes Anthony's, Anthony's at Flannels and Anthony's Patisserie) is to transform the ground floor of the recently restored Corn Exchange into £1m-worth of food retail, lounge bar and brasserie. Dubbed "Piazza de résistance" by the Yorkshire Evening Post, The Piazza by Anthony is planned to open well in time for the Christmas shopping season.
