Mikel Arteta has agreed a new one-year extension with Arsenal.

The Spaniard is out of contract in June and was widely thought to have agreed terms towards the end of last year but a deal was never publicly confirmed.

Arteta signed a four-year agreement when joining the club from Everton in 2011 and it is understood the Merseyside club were interesting in bringing the 32-year-old back to Goodison Park should he decide not to extend his stay in north London.

However, despite currently being sidelined until April after undergoing ankle surgery, Arteta has put pen to paper after productive talks with manager Arsene Wenger.

He has started just six Premier League matches this season but Arteta’s representative Inaki Ibanez told footmercato.net: “Mikel is no longer free next June, because he now has an extra year on his contract.
