Wales vs Poland LIVE: Euro 2024 play-off final result and reaction as Dragons defeated in penalty shootout
Wales 0-0 Poland (4-5 after penalties): Rob Page’s men fail to reach Euro 2024 after penalty heartbreak
Wales failed to secure a place at Euro 2024 after losing their play-off final against Poland in a heart-breaking penalty shootout. The match remained goalless through the first 120 minutes with Wales managing to hold on through extra-time in a competitive match for the first time in their history.
They were the better team for the majority of the evening. Kieffer Moore was a consistent threat in the air and was denied a couple of times from the goalkeeping heroics of Wojciech Szczesny. Ben Davies, expertly marking Robert Lewandowski throughout, had a goal disallowed on the stroke of half-time through a marginal offside.
Wales were unable to take advantage during the second half and the match came down to a shootout. Poland, led by Lewandowski, scored a perfect five meaning Daniel James needed to score to keep the shootout on track. He shot to Szczesny’s right and the goalkeeper leapt across to palm the ball away and send his nation into Euro 2024 this summer.

ET Wales 0-0 Poland
96 mins: Harry Wilson is body checked by Pawel Dawidowicz and gets cleaned out just outside the penalty gifting Wales a free kick right in front of the goal.
This is prime territory for Wilson and Neco Williams though it’s a long way out from goal. Wilson takes it and drills his effort right into the wall.
ET Wales 0-0 Poland
93 mins: No further changes from either manager. Dan James looks to make his way through the right flank and is taken out by Zielinski but manages to win a free kick.
It’s whipped deep into the box and cleared out for a Welsh throw in.
ET Wales 0-0 Poland
90 mins: The hosts get the match back underway for another 30 minutes. There’s been no goals yet but will we see some late drama here tonight?
Extra-time! Wales 0-0 Poland
Nerves may have played their part towards the end of the 90 minutes and will continue to drive both teams forward over the next 30 minutes and potentially further.
The last thing Wales want is to go to penalties. Rob Page needs to come up with a way to find a goal for the home side.
Full-time! Wales 0-0 Poland
90+4 mins: Kieffer Moore is knocked over inside the Polish box but doesn’t win the penalty he’s searching for. The whistle blows to end the 90 minutes plus stoppage time and this play-off is heading for an extra 30 minutes and possibly penalties.
Wales 0-0 Poland
90+2 mins: Not much time left in the 90 minutes here. Can Wales steal a winner?
There’s a few tired legs out there and it doesn’t seem likely. A quick breather may bring some life back into this match before extra-time.
Wales 0-0 Poland
90 mins: Four minutes of added time to play. Robert Lewandowski drills one from 25 yards, he forces Danny Ward to leap across but the shot was always heading wide.
Wales 0-0 Poland
87 mins: Mykhailo Mudryk has given Ukraine the lead over Iceland in the other play-off final. They’ve come from behind to lead 2-1 with only a few minutes left on the clock.
Is there time for similar late drama at the Cardiff City Stadium?
Wales 0-0 Poland
84 mins: Good work from from Dan James in midfield sees him work the ball up to Harry Wilson. He combines with Neco Williams before dancing into the box and losing possession.
For half a moment the space opened up for a shot but Wilson decided not to take it and the attack is repelled.
Connor Roberts looks to have picked up an injury and is replaced with David Brooks for Wales. Will this change things for Rob Pages men?
Wales 0-0 Poland
81 mins: Inside the last 10 minutes of the 90 now and still nothing to separate the two teams. Things are getting tense and any goal now would surely be enough to send someone to Euro 2024.
Will win see a winner?
Karol Swiderski and Jan Bednarek are replaced with Bartosz Salamon and Krzysztof Piatek.
