It was, in a sense, an advert for women’s tennis. It barely lasted longer than one.
By the end of Petra Kvitova’s gruelling first round encounter, it’s possible there might have been a bead of sweat to be found somewhere on the defending champion.
It was thirty degrees after all, the roof wide open. But the entire contest only lasted thirty four minutes, world number 41 Kiki Bertens losing 6-1. 6-0.
Kvitova just a single point on her serve, a double fault.
“I think nerves are important, they have to be helpful,” Kvitova said afterwards. “I like them. I was sick a few days ago but still played very well.”
Kvitova, who also won in 2011, now moves into the second round. A composed a performance only establishes her further as the most realistic challenger to Serena Williams for the title.
