Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev dance The Flames of Paris

Dance review: The Flames of Paris - Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev boost the Bolshoi's London season

When ex-Bolshoi Ballet stars Natalia Osipova and Ivan Vasiliev dance, stunned gasps rise up from the theatre: a collective “oh” of wonder and delight. Returning for a guest appearance with their former company, Vasiliev and Osipova give the Bolshoi’s London season an astonishing boost, as high and exhilarating as their soaring jumps. They lift everything around them.

Ballet dancer Carlos Acosta

Dance review: Carlos Acosta – Classical Selection, The Royal Ballet, London Coliseum

Carlos Acosta is a generous host. Classical Selection, a programme celebrating the ballet star’s 40th birthday, is much more substantial than most galas. Looking back over his own career, Acosta also makes the most of his colleagues from The Royal Ballet. It’s a lavish but surprisingly intimate evening, with superb dancing, live music and a friendly sense of scale.

Ballet review: A Tribute to Rudolf Nureyev, London Coliseum

2013 marks 75 years since the birth of Rudolf Nureyev, twenty since his death. English National Ballet’s new triple bill pays tribute to one of ballet’s greatest stars, and to the range of his career, which stretched from classicism of his Russian schooling to the new and older ballets he discovered on defecting to the west. ENB’s tribute is wide in scope but patchy in execution.

Tamara Rojo: The ballet-dancer-turned-artistic-director on her burst appendix, the Bolshoi acid attack and elitism

I was hooked on ballet from an early age I was five, watching a class all dressed in pale-pink led by a thin, beautiful teacher dressed in burgundy. She was so different from the other teachers at my school, who were nuns. My parents didn't want me to do ballet, so I insisted until they gave up: I used crying and all the manipulative tricks little kids have.

Ballet review: Russian Seasons of XXI Century, London Coliseum

Some shows just seem to be doomed. On opening night, the Russian Seasons of XXI Century dropped one production due to injury, then added an unscheduled interval while they tried to fix the lighting. Technical hitches aside, it was a ramshackle night of dubious revivals and recorded music. The bright spot was British-born guest star Xander Parish, dancing with bold conviction.
