Dimitar Berbatov was yesterday told by the Tottenham Hotspur hierarchy that he was not wanted at Stamford Bridge as the negotiations to sell the player to Manchester United went into today's final 24 hours of the transfer window. The Bulgarian striker was left out the Spurs squad for the second consecutive game as the club waited for United to match their £30m valuation.

Hull City have made a £7 million bid for Manchester United's Fraizer Campbell. The 20-year-old striker spent seven months on loan at the KC Stadium last season, helping the club into the Premier League with 15 goals. The Yorkshire club's chairman, Paul Duffen, yesterday admitted that he had made an offer to Old Trafford.

It should have been one of those nights when Sir Alex Ferguson basked in the glory of his team being European champions and mopped up another early-season trophy, but it ended as a bit of a disaster. Ambushed by the daring, attacking football of Zenit St Petersburg the embarrassment was compounded when Paul Scholes was sent off for a daft handball which earns him a Champions League suspension.

Sir Alex Ferguson has pledged to take the encounter with Uefa Cup winners Zenit St Petersburg seriously after losing out to Lazio the last time United played in the game following their Champions League triumph over Bayern Munich in 1999.

Sir Alex Ferguson has warned his Manchester United players that they must sign off with a win when they make their final appearance in the Premier League for nearly three weeks at Portsmouth tonight. United are due to fly to Monaco to face Zenit St Petersburg in the Uefa Super Cup on Friday and Ferguson knows his title rivals have an opportunity to open up an early lead next weekend.
