A sideways look at the world of music

Album review: Darwin Deez, Songs for Imaginative People (Lucky Number)

Darwin Deez is hard quirk. The Brooklyn singer is someone you'd never want to be trapped in a lift with, so turned-up-to-11 is his personality, and Songs for Imaginative People ("for", you note, not "by") is essentially a They Might Be Giants record for hipsters.

Album review: Foals, Holy Fire (Transgressive)

Is it pop or is it art? May Foals never be forced to decide.

My Bloody Valentine's Bilinda Butcher

Album: Veronica Falls, Waiting for Something to Happen (Bella Union)

Veronica Falls are a band for whom it's perpetually 1986 and My Bloody Valentine never discovered their speakers went up to "supernova".

Album review: Local Natives, Hummingbird (Infectious)

Their 2009 debut album saw them compared to Fleet Foxes, who they claimed not to have even heard when they were making it.

Album review: Ducktails, The Flower Lane (Domino)

There's half a great album in here. Ducktails are a vehicle for Real Estate's Matt Mondanile, and fourth album The Flower Lane finds him undecided about which way to fly.

When Christopher visited where Harry met Sally...

Taking a tour of celebrity homes is so last century. What the discerning movie buff does now is pay homage at the location of their favourite scene. And the website FILMography has made it all the more joyous with a collection of images that matches modern-day New York with stills from movies as diverse as The Dark Knight Rises, Leon and Annie Hall.

Jazz pianist Ahmad Jamal

IoS Sounds of 2013: Jazz

There are not many artists who reignite their careers in their ninth decade, but the Pittsburgh-born pianist Ahmad Jamal, who comes to London's Barbican on 8 February, is really on a roll, at 82. The knockout title track from his latest album, Blue Moon, has been nominated for a Grammy and his London performance will be a showcase for the disc
