A sideways look at the world of music

Album: Mahler, Lieder eines Fahrenden etc/ Gerhaher/Nagano/OSDM (Sony)

The contained beauty of Christian Gerhaher's voice is but a small part of his art.

Album: Babyshambles, Sequel to the Prequel (EMI)

The Doherty debate – a wasted talent, or just a talent for getting wasted? – leans closer to the latter with every passing year.

Album: The 1975, The 1975 (Dirty Hit)

Manchester indie quartet The 1975 formed because they realised that making music was "better than going to work".

Keane's Tom Chaplin (left) and Tim Rice-Oxley

Music review: Keane, Kenwood House, London

All kinds of shenanigans go on in Hampstead Heath after dark, so it’s perhaps no surprise to find long-term critical whipping boys Keane performing in one of its more secluded corners.

Ben Howard at the Green Man Festival

Green Man Festival review: Headliners Kings of Convenience and Ben Howard were the weakest aspects

The Green Man festival’s Brecon Beacons setting regularly startles with its beauty. The Black Mountains – more like lush green hills – and open sky which tower over its stages don’t dwarf the performers, instead making them feel part of something bigger. A diverse bill leaning towards folk and Americana often rises to the landscape’s challenge.

Tom Odell: The critics’ pick gets a big stage

Alt-J, Tom Odell and Jake Bugg revealed on Cameron's G8 playlist gift

It’s assemblage of polite, contemporary pop would make an ideal dinner party backdrop. But the playlist, featuring Tom Odell and Alt-J, was a gift given by David Cameron to his fellow G8 leaders as a “Best of British” soundtrack to their Northern Ireland gathering.

Colette wants to release her crowd-funded third album through her own label Candy Talk

Caught in the net: The man of the forest engraves his sound

It's rather hard to describe the sound of Forest Swords, as evinced by the new track from the Liverpool producer (aka Matthew Barnes). The piece, “The Weight of Gold”, comes from his August released album Engravings and is streaming through his Soundcloud and at forestswords.tumblr.com. It's a murky, dark and experimental affair, with snippets of guitar tones, beats rolling through, fragments of vocals and various sonic and electronic effects. Whatever which way one describes the thing, it's probably best to say it sounds great and is worth attention.

The move comes in response to a campaign by celebrity TV chef Jamie Oliver to improve school meals.
