When Melody Gardot sings "It's a miracle I'm alive, I do not think I can survive", she's singing from the heart. The lyrics come from the first song she wrote, in the aftermath of the traffic accident that almost killed her. Today, '"Some Lessons" is still the song that defines her.

Optimum Wong Kar Wai's American debut is like a parody of his earlier films: pretentious, vague, and smudged with hazy, neon-lit, slow-motion camera work. It stars Norah Jones as a New Yorker who breaks up with her boyfriend and hangs around Jude Law's café for blueberry pie and sympathy. She then takes a bus across the country, stopping off in Tennessee and Nevada, and crossing paths with hard-luck cases played by Rachel Weisz, David Strathairn and Natalie Portman. But nobody gets anything amounting to a storyline. The blueberry pie doesn't look very appetising either.

It may be three decades since Laurie Anderson reached No. 2 in the UK singles chart with her eight-minute experimental epic "O, Superman"– which was a haunting indictment of Cold War American foreign policy – but the New Yorker reminded British audiences this week that she has lost none of her radical fire.
