1. Just deserts

On Tuesday the Royal Geographical Society opens its latest exhibition, focusing on the Tuareg, a community of desert nomads. Running until 20 June, "The Tuareg or Kel Tamasheq" includes photographs, paintings and historical documents. Free entry.

2. Tougher SA

Starting on Monday, tough new rules apply for under-18s travelling to South Africa – or merely transiting through Johannesburg airport. Parents must be able to produce the child's full, unabridged birth certificate. There are additional requirements if the child is travelling with only one parent, with neither biological parent, or unaccompanied.

3. Have a flutter

Whipsnade Zoo has opened a new Butterfly House. It is home to hundreds of butterflies, of 30 different species, including the Blue Morpho, from Central and South America, and the Scarlet Mormon, from the Philippines. In the Metamorphosis Zone visitors can see the different stages of the life cycle, from caterpillar to chrysalis to butterfly.

4. Take a ride

A new cycling holiday company, The Raid, launches on Monday, offering famous bike rides around the world. There is even the chance to gain entry to the exclusive Cinglés du Ventoux club, for which you must cycle the three different ascents of Mont Ventoux in 24 hours.

5. Takeover plan

English Heritage is running a "Kids Takeover" campaign in search of its first Child Executive Officer. The role will see a child aged 12 or under take charge of the charity's summer events programme, and receive lifetime membership of English Heritage, a birthday party at a castle, and a stay in a holiday cottage.

6. Keep it brief

Brighton-based Rickshaw Travel has launched a new website offering "bite-sized" experiences of three or four days in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Options include following in the final footsteps of Che Guevara in Bolivia (pictured) and kayaking through the limestone peaks of Vang Vieng in Laos.

7. Appy travels

GoEuro is a new app for checking times and prices of rail, coach and air travel across eight European countries, allowing you to compare the cost and duration of the full journey. Free for Android and iOS, the app checks more than 160 companies, and can also be used to book tickets.
