Whether ocean sailing, river cruising or just strolling along the pier, there are some fine gourmet experiences to be had.

Discover why Michel Roux's cooking has made him a triple Michelin-starred chef on a Celebrity Cruise (08000 182525; celebrity.com) around the Caribbean. Try the Ithaa Undersea Restaurant, Hilton Maldives Resort & Spa, Rangali Island, Maldives (00 960 668 0629; hilton.com) located on a coral reef five metres under the Indian ocean.

Discover your sea legs on a Manohra dinner cruise along the Chao Phraya River, 257 Charoennakorn Road, Bangkok (00 66 2477 0770; manohra cruises.com).

Arrive at the Al Mahara at Burj Al Arab Hotel, Dubai (00 971 4 301 7648; burj-al-arab.com), after a three-minute virtual submarine ride. Even the stunning oval aquarium doesn't overshadow the restaurant's seafood.

If you're looking for candy floss and fish and chips, you'll be disappointed by Pier Restaurant, 594 New South Head Road, Rose Bay, Sydney (00 61 2 9327 6561; pierrestaurant.com.au). Pan-roasted barramundi is the more sophisticated order of the day.

Andy Lynes is the UK manager of the gastro website eGullet.org
