Hydrogen convoy arrives in Copenhagen

A convey of hydrogen-powered vehicles has crossed the Öresund Bridge from Sweden into Denmark, in a co-ordinated display to showcase hydrogen as the eco-friendly fuel of the future.

Fourteen vehicles made the 44 km journey, starting from a hydrogen refueling station in Malmo, Sweden and ending at the Danish Parliament building in Copenhagen, Denmark. The cars making the journey included the GM HydroGen4, the Fiat Panda Hydrogen, the Mercedes B-class F-CELL, the Honda FCX Clarity and the TH!NK Hydrogen Car.

The convoy stopped en route to refuel at the Copenhagen Hydrogen Fuelling station, opened on November 12. With the COP15, the 15th UN Climate Change Conference, kicking off next week in Copenhagen, organizers plan to keep the fleet in Denmark to transport VIPs during the conference.

Yesterday's "Bridge to Hydrogen" convoy was the product of a consortium led by the European Hydrogen Association, which is keen to push hydrogen technology as a viable way to reduce transport emissions. However, the technology is still considered experimental and adoption has been slow - the global testing and certification firm TÜV SÜD estimates that there are only an estimated 368 hydrogen fuelling stations worldwide.
