June is one of the best times to enjoy holidays around Europe, before the schools empty and the prices shoot upwards. You can usually count on warm days and warming seas, without having to endure the withering heat of high summer. And if you’re planning a September getaway, have a look at some of these holiday ideas.

Go now

Sardinia

Before the crowds descend for the summer holidays in July and August, now’s the time to hit the exquisite beaches of Sardinia. On the northeastern corner of the island is classy Hotel La Rocca Resort & Spa, which is set out more like a village than a typical beach resort. If the pool and spa aren’t enough, there’s a free shuttle to the resort’s own stretch of private beach 800m away. Sardatur Holidays has seven nights’ B&B at La Rocca from £1,440pp, including flights and transfers, departing 16 June.

Porto Cervo, Sardinia

Thailand

Escape Phuket’s hotspots and relax on the tranquil sands of Nai Yang Beach just to the north. The tropical garden-filled Slate resort is close to Phuket Town and the airport, but has a welcome aura of serenity among its three swimming pools and spa. Best at Travel has seven nights in a suite from £925pp, including flights, transfers and breakfast, for departures up to 23 June.

Turkey

In a sign that British tourists are returning to Turkey, Mark Warner has added Phokaia Beach Resort to its list of summer holidays. Set on the Aegean Sea near the delightful town of Foca, the resort has a dizzying number of ways to pass the time in the sun, including kayaking, paddle boarding, sailing and windsurfing. Departing 16 June, the seven-night holiday costs from £699pp and includes five days’ full board, two days’ half board, flights, transfers, childcare, activities and watersports.

Foca, Turkey

Cornwall

Just a short walk from the harbour at Boscastle is Brambles, a Grade II-listed cottage that’s an attractive base for exploring Cornwall’s Atlantic coast. There are three bedrooms, along with a cosy sitting room with a wood-burning stove. You can also catch sea views from the garden while you’re having barbecues. Sykes Holiday Cottages has a week’s rental from 16 June for £863.

Book now for September

Croatia

Get a double dose of island life along Croatia’s Adriatic coast which, in September, will still be gorgeously warm. The medieval town of Trogir sits on its own little island north of Split. From there, you can cross the bridge to Ciovo island and enjoy the views from the peaceful vantage point of the chic boutique Brown Beach Hotel. Long Travel has a week’s stay from £1,449pp including flights, transfers and breakfast, departing 11 September.

Trogir, Croatia

Thessaloniki

Greece’s second city gets overshadowed by the capital, coasts and islands, but people are missing out on Thessaloniki’s vibrant atmosphere, rich history and fascinating patchwork of distinct districts. Discover the city and its revitalised waterfront on a three-night break with Sunvil at the five-star Hotel Bristol from £671pp. The price includes flights, accommodation, breakfast, transfers and a walking tour, and it’s valid for departures throughout September.

Thessaloniki, Greece

Ibiza

If the manic mega-clubs of Ibiza Town don’t appeal, head into the hills around San Carlos to see the polar opposite of this Balearic island. In a lovely spot with views of the sea, Agroturismo Can Talaias is only 10 minutes from the superb beaches of Cala Llenya and Cala Mastella but is in its own little laid-back universe surrounded by olive trees. A week’s holiday with i-escape costs from £532pp, including breakfast, for departures throughout September. Flights are extra.
