1. Martin Sepp Heurige, Grinzing, Vienna

Although better known for its cakes, Austria does cater for savoury palettes.

Visit a traditional "heurige", or wine tavern, to enjoy the local vintage and authentic local food. At the Martin Sepp Heurige you'll join locals for a tasty, home-style meal. If the extensive salad bar isn't enough to tempt the vegetarians then their selection of spinach, egg or pumpkin dumplings will surely hit the spot. The only trouble you're likely to have is walking out at the end – the portions are big and the food is "hearty".

Details: Two nights' B&B in a 4-star hotel in Vienna (00 43 1 24 555; vienna.info) for two sharing, starts at €89 (£78) per person. British Airways (0871 909 2303; ba.com) offers return flights to Vienna from £117. A meal for two with wine at Martin Sepp Heurige (00 43 1 320 32 33; zummartinsepp.at) is about €60.

2. Mama's Ladas, Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Mama's Ladas has a fairly unique selling point: it only serves one dish – enchiladas. But, as well as the chicken or beef variety they also do a delicious broccoli and cheese enchilada. Tuck in with a side order of nachos, homemade salsa and a large jug of sangria. Expect fairy lights, quirky pictures, and waitresses with big personalities.

Details: America As You Like (020-8742 8299; americaasyoulikeit.com) has return flights from London to Sioux Falls on Delta Airlines, car hire, and seven nights at the Comfort Inn South Sioux Falls, from £745 per person, based on two sharing. A meal for two, with sangria, at Mama's Ladas (mamasladas.com; 001 605 332 2772) is around $30 (£19).

3. Bearfoot Bistro, Whistler, British Columbia

There is nothing on the menu dedicated to vegetarians, but executive chef Melissa Craig will whip up a veggie meal to rival any meat dish. You only have to ask. It will convince you that being a vegetarian doesn't mean being forgotten. Add a bottle of champagne and owner André Saint-Jacques will show you how to sabre it – a Napoleonic tradition which once involved slicing the bottle's head off while galloping past on a horse. These days, you do it standing still in the safety of Andre's cellar.

Details: Canadian Affair (020-7616 9184; canadianaffair .com) has a five-night, room-only package from £668 per person, based on two sharing at the Delta Whistler Village Suites. It includes return flights between Gatwick and Vancouver. The veggie taster menu for two, with wine, at The Bearfoot Bistro (bearfootbistro.com; 001 604 932 3433) is $196 (£123).

4. Intrepids, Samburu, Kenya

Crisp white linen, a five course meal and sorbet to clean the palette may not immediately spring to mind when thinking of dining in Kenya, but Intrepids in the Samburu desert delivers them all. Examine the Milky Way as you sit out under a night sky free of light pollution. And eat your way through sautéd aubergine, with yellow and red pepper in mild curry sauce and served with cardamon rice and masala potatoes. And, each evening a genet cat, actually part of the mongoose family, comes to visit. You're not supposed to feed her, but who can resist that cute face and ringed tail?

Details: Kuoni (01306 747008; kuoni.co.uk) offers four nights' full-board at Samburu Intrepids with international and domestic flights and transfers, from £1,723 each based on two sharing. Quote: MB991.

5. Sports Bar and Restaurant, Maun, Botswana

Vegetable curry, halumi spring rolls, stuffed mushrooms and stacked pizza are just a few of the non-meat meals served at the Sports Bar. It may not be five-star luxury but it offers simple food, good value and friendly service and is popular with the ex-pat and tourist crowd. After your meal, there's the bar area, TV screens and pool tables.

Details: Two nights at the Thamalakane River Lodge, Maun, with To Escape To (020-7060 6747; toescapeto.co.uk) including return flights and B&B, costs from at £1,329 per person, based on two sharing. Add an Okavango Delta safari from £790 including two nights' board, flights, meals, drinks and game drives. A meal for two at The Sports Bar (00 267 686 2676) is approximately £30.

6. Wheelwrights Arms, Bath

A gastro pub with more than risotto to offer the vegetarian. Try stuffed butternut squash with goat's cheese and pine nuts or sautéed wild mushrooms with roasted garlic and local Kelston Park cheese in a filo basket. Top it off with a selection from their reasonably priced wine list. Chunky wooden tables, wrought iron, stonework and pictures of farm animals give the place an Olde English feel. After dinner you only have to stagger up the stairs to reach your bed.

Details: A weekend at the Wheelwrights Arms (01225 722287; wheelwrightsarms.co.uk), including breakfast is from £270, based on two sharing. An evening meal for two, excluding wine, is around £60.
