Bargain of the week: go west with BA

The latest tranche of long-haul offers from British Airways has some good US fares (£229 from Heathrow to New York, £299 to California). But for anyone whose summer travels are not yet fixed there is some outstanding value to the Caribbean. A flat £399 return applies for flights to Antigua, Barbados, Grenada and Tobago on many dates from June to October. The same fare applies to Nassau in the Bahamas, and Bermuda - which normally sells for around £800 return.

Closer to home, BA's affiliate GB Airways has a range of specials from Gatwick to Mediterranean destinations; Menorca in May, for example, for £99 return; Club Europe is available for £263, though a local promotion at Gatwick and Mahon airports may allow you to upgrade on-the-spot for £50 each way.

Warning of the week: Kenya's coast

The Indian Ocean city of Mombasa is the location for the World Cross Country Championships due to take place two weeks from today. The Foreign Office is warning of "reports regarding a possible terrorist attack" on the event. "We are liaising with the Kenyan authorities to help ensure that adequate security measures are put in place for the event." Mombasa was the location for a suicide bomb attack on a hotel five years ago, in which at least 15 people died. On the same day, terrorists failed in an attempt to shoot down an Israeli charter aircraft.

Destination of the week: Ryanair invades Slovenia

Europe's leading low-cost airline has announced its first venture into Slovenia. As usual, Ryanair (0871 246 0000; www.ryanair.com) has opted for the secondary airport - which in this case is at Maribor (below) in Slovenia's north-east. The thrice-weekly service from Stansted begins on 5 June. Until now, Ryanair has served the west of this lovely country through Trieste (Italy) and the east through Graz (Austria). Both these links will continue, allowing the possibility of an "open-jaw" itinerary, flying into one airport and out of another. You could also combine it with easyJet's service between Stansted and Ljubljana, the capital.

Next month, Ryanair begins its invasion of the Balkans with a link from Stansted to Zadar on the coast of Croatia. Flights start on 23 April.
