Destination of the week: Martha's Vineyard

The leading US low-cost airline, jetBlue, is getting its teeth into a range of new destinations. Links to Providenciales in the Turks & Caicos Islands began last weekend from New York JFK and Boston. From 23 May, Long Beach (serving Los Angeles) gets connected with Alaska's main city, Anchorage. This will increase options for including the largest US state in a West Coast holiday. Yet jaws will drop at the choice of a New England destination: Martha's Vineyard (pictured), where Steven Spielberg filmed his 1975 classic about killer sharks.

Starting 26 May, the tranquil Massachusetts island will become an easy add-on for any New York weekender, as it gains its first low-cost flight. On that date, jetBlue begins daily departures from JFK airport to Martha's Vineyard; the summer-only service continues to 6 September. Fares as low as $60 (£40) are available at jetBlue.com.

Warning of the week: Easter Island

For ambitious British travellers, the most exciting new development of the year was the launch of a non-stop link between Lima and Easter Island. The flight from the Peruvian capital opened up new options for travellers keen to combine the great sites of the Inca Empire with the strange Moai heads on the remote Pacific island. The operator, Lan, is part of the Oneworld alliance along with British Airways This allows the Lima-Easter Island flight to be included in a range of enticing round-the-world options.

But almost as soon as the new route had begun, its imminent demise was announced – apparently because of fleet issues at Lan. From 11 April, the only departure point for flights from Latin America to Easter Island will, once again, be the Chilean capital, Santiago. However, services from Lima to the island are due to re-start from next January.

Bargain of the week: Dunkirk for less
