Warning of the week: farewell to frills on BMI

BMI (0870 60 70 555; www.flybmi.com) axes free food and drink for economy passengers on its European network from Monday, 1 August. The airline will also abolish business class on all but five key routes from Heathrow: Belfast, Brussels, Dublin, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Destination of the week: oblivion for EUjet

The brave attempt to launch a low-cost airline from Manston in Kent ended last Tuesday, after 10 months of heavy losses.

As is now customary, other airlines stepped in to repatriate stranded passengers: easyJet and FlyBE offer a flat fare of £25 to bring back EUjet passengers before midnight on Tuesday; Monarch Scheduled has a similar deal that extends until Wednesday.

But anyone booked to travel in the next few months may well have lost their money, and replacement flights for the summer are likely to be very expensive.
