Swedish firm to launch world's largest ferry
Friday 14 May 2010
Stena Line is to launch the world's largest passenger ferry May 16, sailing between the Netherlands and Great Britain.
The Stena Hollandica, which carries 1376 beds, 230 cars and 300 freight vehicles, will sail regularly between the Hook of Holland and Harwich, a busy tourist and commercial sea passage.
She will be joined by a sister ship, the Stena Brittanica, later this year.
Passengers on board two superferries will be able to sleep in 538 cabins or enjoy the onboard cinema, bar, lounge and buffet and a la carte restaurants.
There is also free wifi across the entire ship, a sun deck, 12 kennels for dogs and special zones for children and teenagers.
Stena says that the new ferries are greener than ever, despite being the largest in the world in terms of combined capacity.
The engines feature catalytic converters, onboard waste is recycled and windows are covered with a protective film to reduce heat energy and the use of air conditioning.
The crossing between the Netherlands and Britain will take approximately 6.5 hours.
Despite being the largest ferry in the world, the 62,200 ton Stena Brittanica pales in comparison to the world's largest cruise ship, the 225,282 ton Oasis of the Seas.
