Wild camping

The Chem Chem Bushcamp opens in Tanzania on 23 September on the edge of Tarangire National Park. The wilderness retreat, which has five canvas tents, is an extension of the Chem Chem Lodge and offers many of the same luxury amenities – double beds, flushing toilets and Molton Brown toiletries. Nightly packages with meals and game drives start at US$740/£493 per person (chemchemsafari.com).

Germany express

The fine German city of Freiburg, on the edge of the Black Forest, becomes more accessible by rail this week with the launch of direct high-speed trains from Paris Gare de Lyon. The trip, via Dijon and Mulhouse, is under four hours (europebyrail.eu).

Girls getaway

Escape Haven is a new wellness retreat for women that is due to open in the Portuguese town of Sagres this autumn. Guests will stay in a shared private villa, combining yoga, with surf and healthy eating over the six-night stay. Start dates are 12 and 19 October; €2,000pp, all inclusive (escapehaven.com).

Free speech

Language school, Rosetta Stone, has created a free Travel App for those wanting to master Spanish, Italian, French or German, complete with a built-in phrase book (bit.ly/LanguageApp).

Head to California next month as the state celebrates "wine month". Seventy producers will host tastings and events (bit.ly/WineEscape).

Art in Adelaide

The Majestic Minima Hotel has been open in the capital of South Australia since 2008, but has now had an overhaul after handing over its 46 rooms to a group of local artists (majestichotels.com.au).

French lessons

L'Ancienne Poste lodge in the French Pyrenees is launching "Ski Clinics" for the 2013/14 season. The four-day courses were conceived by owner and qualified instructor, James Dealtry, in an effort to entice rusty skiers back to the slopes. It costs €499pp with three nights' half board and daily tuition (ancienneposteavajan.com).
