Today: Check into the Château Charly, a luxury B&B in a 19th-century mansion in central France. Run as a not-for-profit organisation, the B&B is donating room rates to charities in Haiti and Sri Lanka ( chateaucharly.com).

In the diary: It's the last chance for intrepid young travellers to win a trip to Nepal with the Young Adventurer of the Year competition, run by National Geographic in association with The Independent. The closing date is Wednesday, 31 August ( ngkids.co.uk/adventure).

This week: Two of London's luxury hotels have launched cycling initiatives. The W has commissioned six bikes designed by the likes of Patrick Cox and Paloma Faith and are available to guests until they're auctioned on 29 October. The InterContinental Park Lane has created a "B-Spoke" experience with Rob Penn, including a hosted ride with the author ( london.intercontinental.com). Close by, The Dorchester's sister hotel, 45 Park Lane opens on Thursday ( 45parklane.com).
