Today...

Bankside in London plays host to the historic Winter Festival, which harks back to the Frost Fair that would take place when the Thames froze over between London and Blackfriars Bridges. This year's offering sees around 50 arts and crafts stalls, a guided walk and Siberian husky-sleigh rides (visitsouthwark.com).

This week...

Following last month's terrorist attacks in Mumbai, two of the besieged hotels – the Trident and the Taj Mahal Palace – will reopen tomorrow (tridenthotels.com; tajhotels.com).

Later in the week, you can stride off the Christmas pounds during the Festival of Winter Walks, which this year celebrates its 20th anniversary. Seven hundred walks are being organised around the UK from Friday until 4 January (ramblers.org.uk).

In the diary...

Expect the stars of the silver screen at the 20th Palm Springs International Film Festival, which runs from 6-19 January. The Big Blue Festival promises more high-octane thrills. It arrives on the shores of the Western Cape of South Africa from 8-10 January and features beach runs, night marathons, kids' activities and adrenalin sports by the Kleinmond Lagoon (thebigblue.co.za).
