Today: It's full steam ahead for the start of National Ferry Fortnight, highlighting the benefits of sea travel – no baggage fees, security queues, or trouble from volcanic ash clouds – with promotions and special offers ( discoverferries.co.uk ).

Meanwhile in Portugal, the Areias do Seixo hotel (above) welcomes its first guests on the Costa de Prata. The 10 suites feature terraces overlooking the Atlantic ( areiasdoseixo.com ).

This week: Malaria Awareness Week kicks off on Monday, drawing attention to the prevention of the potentially fatal disease ( malariahotspots.co.uk ).

Two reasons to revel in Europe: the first is the Czech Beer Festival, which gets under way in Prague on Friday with some of the world's best beers; until 30 May ( ceskypivnifestival.cz ). Secondly, Museums at Night which also starts on Friday and runs over the weekend throughout the UK and Europe with special events such as spending the night in a Second World War bunker at the Cabinet War Rooms ( culture24.org.uk ).

In the diary: The Breathe Festival brings added gusto to Brazil's Itacaré coast from 15-25 May, with field trips, arts events and music to highlight the region's natural beauty ( breathefoundation.org ).
