Today: Help get our shores ready for summer. Surfers Against Sewage is organising a series of "Clean up your Local Beach" events throughout the summer, starting with Greenwich. Volunteers are treated to a barbecue and samples of Barefoot wine for their efforts. Other locations include Broadstairs, Scarborough and Porthtowan (sas.org.uk).

Meanwhile, visitors to London Zoo will be able to welcome the penguins to their new home. Moving on from their iconic art deco pool, the Antarctic Macaroni and South American Humboldt penguins now reside in the £2m Penguin Beach, complete with rocks and sandy shores (zsl.org).

This week: The party season gets under way in Mallorca and Ibiza where Plan B plays on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively, opening at Mallorca and Ibiza Rocks. Other summer highlights include Fatboy Slim, Mark Ronson and Madness (ibizarocks.com). Across the Atlantic, check into La Maison Blanche, a 19th-century beach house that has been given a chic makeover as a contemporary hotel on Shelter Island, Long Island (maisonblanchehotel. com).

In the diary: A stylish new address opens in Athens on 15 June, in the form of New Hotel (above), which takes inspiration from Athenian culture and features innovative bespoke furniture, courtesy of Brazilian designers the Campana brothers (yeshotels.gr). Also coming up: the Independent Radio Festival is in Zurich from 9-19 June. Three festival studios will set up in Sihlcity, hosting 30 radio stations from around the world (internationalradiofestival.com).
