Every week we invite competing companies to give us their best deal for a specific holiday. Today: a week's horse riding in the United States. Prices are per person, based on two people travelling together in mid-September. International flights and transfers are not included.

Ranch Rider

£1,306: Goosewing Ranch, Wyoming

Includes six nights' full board accommodation with daily departures in September, most ranch activities (including riding) and gratuities. "If it's the wilder side of the West you crave, look no further than the Goosewing Ranch in Wyoming. After Western riding instruction you can follow the trails out to where the deer and the antelope (and bear and elk) play, with eagles swooping overhead. The owners also organise trips to Yellowstone, which is just 45 minutes away," says Tony Daly at Ranch Rider (01509 618 811; ranchrider.com).

In the Saddle

£1,566: Redwood Coast, California

Includes six nights' full board accommodation from 13 September as well as activities and evening entertainment. "This is a glorious ride on superbly fit endurance horses on the beach and through the Redwood forests of northern California," says Olwen Law of In The Saddle (01299 272 997; inthesaddle.com).

Ride World Wide

£1,150: ranch stay for capable riders at Flynn Ranch, Montana

Includes eight nights' full board accommodation (six based on the ranch, two in the town of Bozeman) from 12 September, as well as all riding and equipment and transfers from Bozeman. "This is most definitely not a 'dude' ranch – it is the real thing. It's what you might call a 'hands-on, get stuck in and be part of the team' ranch," says Ruth Taggart of Ride World Wide (01837 82544; rideworldwide.com).
