Wacky world - weekly offbeat travel roundup
Saturday 11 December 2010
A roundup of this week's offbeat travel stories.
The Tron Suite
Tron: Legacy has drawn mixed reviews across the board, but the Swedish Icehotel in Jukkasjarvi is clearly a big fan - for its reopening, it has unveiled a Tron-themed suite. The designed used electroluminescent wires to produce the funky lighting effects, as well as six tons of ice.

Baywatch vs the TSA
The latest wince-inducing story prompted by the US TSA comes courtesy of Donna D'Errico, a former Playboy model and Baywatch actress who draws a sharp distinction between posing nude and being photographed at airport security. She claims that the TSA agent singled her out because they thought she was attractive, although the TSA says that passengers are "selected at random and not because they're celebrities."
Sky-high same-sex wedding
Following a high-profile competition seeking potential couples, Scandanavian Airlines (SAS) this week became the first airline to hold an inflight same-sex wedding. The airline laid on the ceremony in the business class cabin of flight SK903 between Stockholm and JFK, before whisking the winners off for a three night stay at the luxury W Hotel in New York.
Television-induced travel disruption
After the popular 50th anniversary episode of British soap opera Coronation Street, which saw a tram crash in a fictional neighbourhood of Manchester, the city's transport authorities have reported a number of calls from concerned members of the public to enquire "whether services were affected." The less said the better, we think.
Passengers on board Greek-owned Antarctic cruise ship Clielia II have described their cruise as a "terrifying ordeal" after being caught in a vicious storm between the Cape Passage and Antarctica this week. The vessel was forced to declare an emergency after being battered by 30-40 foot (9-12m) waves which broke windows and knocked out communications (watch the video here) but miraculously, no-one was injured.
