(Suite Hotel Pincoffs)

This week sees the start of the North Sea Jazz Festival in the Netherlands, with 65,000 people expected to pour into the trendy port city of Rotterdam.

Although Amsterdam accounts for the lion's share of visits to the Netherlands, any local will tell you that Dutch people work in Rotterdam, play in Amsterdam and live in The Hague, so it's quite common for people to visit all three.

Indeed, the three cities, plus Utrecht, attracted 4.3 million guests in 2008, far more than the seaside towns on the North Sea, which are also popular with tourists from nearby Germany and Belgium and are the second most visited area in the Netherlands.

Amsterdam
Amsterdam boasts a world-class selection of hotels in different price ranges, many of which are very reasonable. The Fusion Suites B&B topped the predominantly boutique properties in the city.

2 Seven Bridges Hotel
3 Hotel Heemskerk
4 The Toren
5 Hotel Fita

Rotterdam

Rotterdam visitors went mad for the Pincoffs, which was described as a "gem one seldom finds in a big city" on TripAdvisor. A Small Hotel, on the city's trendy Witte de Withstraat, was second most popular.

The Hague
The top five hotels in Netherlands' historic capital include more luxury properties than other towns, with the boutique Residenz Stadslogement topping the list.

1 Residenz Stadslogement
2 Hotel Des Indes, a Luxury Collection
3 Hotel Mozaic
4 Haagsche Suites
5 Carlton Ambassador Hotel

Utrecht

Utrecht is the religious and academic centre of the Netherlands and boats some of the oldest buildings in the country. Travelers described the five-star Grand Hotel Karel V as "opulent", with excellent staff and a good location.

2 Court Hotel City Centre Utrecht
3 Malie Hotel
4 Hotel De Admiraal

Eindhoven

Eindhoven's top hotel list was dominated by the big names, with the luxury Park Plaza Mandarin taking top place.
