Snow report: Switzerland's dreaming of a white Christmas

The forecast shows it could be a very white Christmas in many European resorts, especially those in Switzerland and France. Almost a metre of snow is predicted to fall at Saas Fee on Christmas Day and Boxing Day.
Ski Club Leader Anna Henley, who's currently in Verbier, reported: "It's been partly cloudy in the morning and bright and sunny in the afternoon. The bumps on Mont Fort have grown large over the past couple of weeks and the approach track to the entry point is quite icy. It's become a little bare in places, so bring on this weekend's snow!"
Temperatures have fallen in Austria too where increased cloud cover forecast for Boxing Day implies resorts such as Hintertux, Kaunertal and Pitztal are in the running for some much-needed snow.
Excellent on-piste conditions are still on offer in Grandvalira, Andorra, where the snow bases are strong at both Pas de la Casa and Soldeu. There's been no new snow and bright sunshine since the beginning of the month but this looks set to change as the clouds roll in.
Decent on-piste conditions are also available in most Italian resorts after good early-season snowfall. Although there has been no new snow this week, Arabba is providing some of the best conditions with a good snow base and fast skiing on groomed runs.
It's still mild for the time of year in Scandinavia and there's been little fresh snow in Norway and Sweden. Geilo in Norway reported good skiing on largely artificial snow on Thursday. Not all terrain is open but they're expecting to open more this weekend for the Christmas period. It's a similar story in the Swedish resort of Are.
It's sunny in Bulgaria with fairly good conditions at Bansko and Borovets (man-made snow providing good coverage on the lower slopes). The best conditions can be found at Pamporovo which has a good early-season base and decent skiing on piste.
Canada continues to receive excellent early-season snowfall. Banff displayed the best conditions this week with Lake Louise and Sunshine Village both serving up powder days. On the east coast, Tremblant and Mont Sainte-Anne are still enjoying an impressive start to the season.
