Killorglin, Ireland

Puck Fair is a three-day festival dating from the 17th century. It is based on a legend that a group of Roundheads disturbed a herd of goats, causing them to stampede into the town of Killorglin, thus warning the townspeople of the Roundheads imminent attack. The festival - essentially a livestock fair, including several parades and street parties - opens with the crowning of a goat as "King Puck", who then presides over the celebrations.

13-30 August

Darwin, Australia

The festival of Darwin marks the end of the tropical "dry season". Taking place in parks throughout Darwin, the festival includes shows and art exhibitions and aims to reflect the culture and beliefs of the local Aboriginal communities.

11-16 August

Berlin, Germany

The Berliner Kinderfestival is just for children. As long as you are under 16 you can take part in activities ranging from the normal (swimming and running) to the utterly bizarre (children wrestling blow-up dolls). More than 50 events are on offer, from 10am to 6pm daily, also including watersports and live music - all of which should keep small-fries perfectly happy.

Memphis, USA

Memphis is once again host to the annual "Elvis week", marking the anniversary of the death of Elvis Presley - though this year, the celebrations will last for nine days. The myriad events include the Elvis Presley International 5km fun run - or "walk" for those following the same burger diet as the King. Last year, more than 50,000 people visited Memphis during Elvis week; this year it reaches a climax on 16 August with a candlelit vigil.

14-16 August

Toronto, Canada

Toronto gives a very wet welcome to the prestigious water-sports contest named "The Extreme World Cup series Water Ski Tournament", which features only the very best competitors in water-skiing, wave-boarding and ski-jumping.

5-12 August

Valencia, Spain

With rain and politics thwarting the UK's summer music festivals, no wonder the best of British have left for Spain's sunnier climes. Valencia's Benicassim festival is the Spanish Glastonbury. The stars on Sunday include Bentley Rhythm Ace, Bjork, Corner Shop, Goldie, Fat Boy Slim, Morcheeba and Primal Scream.
