Foo Fighters cancel Glastonbury and Wembley performances after Dave Grohl breaks leg

The Foo Fighters have cancelled much-anticipated performances at Glastonbury Festival and Wembley Stadium, after lead singer and guitarist Dave Grohl broke his leg.

The band have pulled out of all of their remaining UK and European dates, including their Friday night headlining slot at Worthy Farm on 26 June, Wembley Stadium on 19 and 20 June, Murrayfield in Edinburgh on 23 June and Festivalpark Werchter in Belgium on 25 June.

These cancellations come on top of an earlier announcement that the band will not appear at the Pinkpop Festival in the Netherlands, or at a concert in St Gallen, Switzerland on Tuesday evening.

Grohl, 46, suffered a broken leg when he fell off stage during a concert in Sweden last Friday. Just 15 minutes after the injury, he bravely returned to finish the set at the Ullevi festival.

However, surgery to treat his injuries has made him unable to continue touring.

A statement on the band's website said: "Due to injuries sustained in Dave Grohl's fall from the stage during Foo Fighters' June 12 show at Ullevi Stadium in Gothenburg, Sweden, doctors have required the cancellation of the remainder of the band's dates in the UK and Europe.

"After undergoing surgery Monday, Dave's full recuperation time is still to be determined."

In a message posted on the band's website alongside pictures of his X-ray, Grohl told fans that he had had six metal pins inserted in his leg after "dropping about 12 feet, dislocating my ankle and snapping my fibula like an old pair of take-out chopsticks".

He went on to explain doctors had advised him to "lay low for a while" to prevent infections and long-term damage and ensure the band has "YEARS of gigs ahead of us".

Apologising to his potential concert-goers, the former Nirvana drummer wrote: "I kills me to say it... the doctors have told us to cancel shows. I'm really so sorry, guys."

He added that the band was "doing our best right now to work out a plan."

Grohl also managed to reference Kanye West's infamous encounter with Taylor Swift at the VMAs, and wrote to the fellow Glastonbury headliner: "PS... Kanye... Imma let you have this one...".
