Album: Nick Garrie, The Nightmare of JB Stanislas (Elefant Records)

More cultural curio than lost classic, this is the 40th- anniversary edition of an album that, though often mentioned in the same breath as Forever Changes, was not available to buy until 2005.

Recorded in Paris with a 56-piece orchestra in 1969, Stanislas was supposed to be British singer-songwriter Garrie's shot at the big time. The suicide of his label's boss saw to that and the album never saw the light of day. Its part-Kinks, part-folk, part-hippie-nonsense pop is baroque, barking and beguiling in roughly equal measure.
